1. Tell me a little about yourself and your hair journey. (Name, where you’re from, etc)

My name is Ashley, I am from Beaumont, Texas but currently residing in Houston. I am a full-time student and stay at home mom. I also run a YouTube channel where I create content on fashion, beauty, and all things mommy related.

2. How long have you been natural? Have you always embraced your curls? I have been natural for about 3 1/2 years. After going natural, I had a real boost of confidence. I embraced my hair, because it was MY hair. I tried weaves and braids but I was never truly happy. After having a baby, my fro was too much to manage so my fiancé talked me into getting dreadlocks. I’ve never looked back since.

3. What motivated you to transition? Were you a transitioner or a Big Chopper& why? I was tired of getting perms and my hair seemed to grow and then break off. I transitioned for 6 months because I wasn’t brave enough to rock my hair so low. After 6 months, I had a great Afro so I chopped all my permed ends off.

4. How would you describe your hair? Now I’m loc’d and it’s the best thing ever.

5. What do you love most about your hair? I love that my hair is growing and doing its own thing with low maintenance, that’s what I love the most.

6. What has been the most memorable part of your journey? Has it been easy or difficult or both?! The most memorable part of this journey has been watching my hair grow and change into locs. After my 3rd retwist, my locs started forming and I was truly in love with my decision to loc my hair. It’s easy adjusting to life with locs, but the hardest part was accepting them when they first were started. I wore my hair in a big Afro and I wasn’t used to having short hair again. But that phase only lasted about 3 months.

7. What are (or were) some of your favorite transitioning hairstyles or current dos’? While transitioning, I wore my hair in a twist out as often as possible. When the permed hair was too hard to manage, I wore braids. Now that I have locs, I wear my hair down pretty much all day everyday.

8. What have your experiences been as a ‘natural.’ Any memorable reactions from family or others? When I started wearing my Afro, my parents thought I was crazy and going through a phase. I was raised getting perms since they age of 6. They came around and really embraced how soft and healthy my hair had gotten. Then when I became loc’d my mom really loved it, she thought it fit my personality perfectly.

9. What is your hair regimen (including fav products)? My hair regimen is pretty simple, almost non-existent. I moisturize my scalp and locs daily with coconut oil. I wash my hair every 2 weeks with a Jamaica Mango&Lime conditioner. No shampoo. If i need a good wash and condition, I go to my loctician. I am all about low maintenance

10. What are some of your favorite natural hair websites,YouTuber’s, or blogs? I love Black Girl Long Hair, and I follow tons of natural hair Instagram pages.

11. Anything you want the readers to know? Inspirational words? Whatever you do, do it for yourself. I am all about self-love and empowering young black girls to embrace their flaws and celebrate their uniqueness

12. Where can people find you for more information? I’m on everything!
